This weekend, as the Seventh Sunday of Easter, and the Sunday after Jesus’ Ascension to the Father, the gospel passage takes us back to before Jesus was crucified, when he was interceding on behalf of the disciples to God the Father. His prayer for them is deeply moving, calling for their unity with God the Father and God the Son as well as one another, and their sanctification in the truth. These are rich threads indeed…and have felt particularly profound for me when considered alongside news of the Israeli Military Air Strikes on Palestine this week. I found myself compelled to know more, reading story after story, historical documents, news articles, cries for help and pleas for peace – Jesus calls us to radical unity and reading this alongside the Kairos Palestine call to action to the worlds Church leaders to do justly and speak the truth is discombobulating indeed. That led to this sermon….
Radical Unity
