Set Our Hearts On Fire

#170 This morning I saw a #beautifulsunrise from home just after #morningprayer

The words of the office seemed so apt: As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever.

Amen. (at Ripon College Cuddesdon)

Draw of Morning Prayer

#162 There is something very lovely about the 7:25am walk to #morningprayer especially at the moment when it is barely light. The chapel is a #beaconoflight in the semi-darkness. It looks so inviting that it draws you in, much like Jesus as #lightoftheworld draws people close.

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
For you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.
Abide with us, Lord Jesus,
For the night is at hand and the day is now past.
As the night watch looks for the morning,
So do we look for you, O Christ.
AMEN. (at Ripon College Cuddesdon)

Say Lovely Things

#61 It can be quite upsetting when someone says something hurtful. It can take away your confidence or make you feel quite vulnerable. Words are powerful indeed and we so often underestimate their potential when they are used positively or negatively. A kind word can really pick someone up, just like an unkind word can reduce them to tears. These days our online communication can have just as much of an impact as our verbal communication…“Honour and dishonour come from speaking,
and the tongue of mortals may be their downfall.” #ecclesiasticus4v29to6v1 #morningprayer This has really made me think about what I do and do not say! #saysomethinglovely

A Word to the Wise…

#60 #wisdom is…knowing when to speak and when to listen. It is knowing when to act and when to step back. Wisdom encourages us to think first and speak later. Wisdom leads us to use words of kindness over harmfulness, to embrace rather than push away, to seek to challenge different opinions rather than simply win the argument. Today I #pray that world leaders will seek out wisdom each morning, in every decision they make, and that they will be filled with joy by it. #ecclesiasticus4v11to28 #morningprayer

Realising God’s Potential

#54 When Jesus was asked what happens after we die, who are we with or married to in heaven he reminded people of God’s words to Moses: ‘“I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.“ He is God not of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong.’ #morningprayer #mark12v18to27 How often do we try to see the divine through everyday eyes? We cannot comprehend so much of God and heaven because it is outside of anything we can understand. The beauty of God’s creation does tell us something of His potential though. #aweandwonder

Give to the Emperor what is his…

#53 Jesus said “Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s”…but what about unfair tax systems where the rich barely notice what they are paying and the poor struggle to put food on their tables because they have so little? And is that because the Emperor (or in this case, the Queen) wills it, or because the government do? And are they equally representing ALL of society in the decisions they make and the budget they set? Would Jesus perhaps encourage us to give tax back to those who cannot afford? #wwjd #morningprayer #mark12v13to17

Listen Carefully

#52 Have you ever stopped listening to things that you do not want to hear? Whilst it may make you feel better at the time, I’m not sure it helps communication in the long run. Jesus often used #parables or stories to say the things that people did not want to hear…quite often people did not know what he was saying, or perhaps they did not want to know. I’ve been thinking about #deeperlistening: not so much hearing what people say but catching what they do not say, or want to say but can’t. It can be a real gift to people when they are struggling to talk about something. Is there anyone who you need to listen to this week? #morningprayer #mark12v1to12 (at Ripon College Cuddesdon)

Where Does Your Authority Come From?

#51 In #morningprayer today we read about the #authority of Jesus being challenged #mark11v27toend. Perhaps it is quite apt that #archbishopofcanterbury has today announced that he wants to unite the #anglicancommunion by changing the fabric of what holds us together; rather than a common doctrine, it would move to a relationship of cooperation around matters that we are called to intervene in such as social justice ( Perhaps these moves will lead to criticism and his authority being questioned by some, but should they? What is authority and where does it come from? Who do we listen to and allow to influence our decisions? Do we have a right to question the actions and judgement of others? Wipe The Slate Clean

#50 #forgiveness – a fresh start, a slate wiped clean? People often talk about it as a sort of obligation to the person who has wronged you, but sometimes it isn’t that simple. Forgiveness is a process, it does not mean that we have to ‘forgive and forget’ thus putting ourselves in a vulnerable position again – sometimes that can have dangerous implications. What it does mean is that we need to let go of the wrong, stop ranting about it, and stop the potential it has to make us bitter. “Forgive…so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you…” #mark11v12to26 Is there anything you need to start letting go of today? #morningprayer (at Ripon College Cuddesdon)

Did I say something wrong?

#49 “If you walk in the darkness, you do not know where you are going. While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.” #john12v27to36a #morningprayer Over the last few days I’ve been reflecting on the changes to my life already in ministerial training…it is about giving way to myself and allowing God to guide. Yesterday I listened to a sermon on the tongue, and how it is difficult to not say the wrong thing…that is so true with me! I so often think ‘I should never have said that’ but it is too late! Being a child of the light is about so much, when you think of following the example of #wwjd but for now I am challenged with thinking more and speaking less…difficult indeed!
